Bed bugs spread and reproduce quickly. For many people, especially in dense urban areas like New York City, dealing with an infestation can be a complicated and costly endeavor.

As a pest control company helping clients find and exterminate bed bugs on a daily basis, we can tell you that early detection is the #1 factor for successfully getting rid of bed bugs while minimizing treatment costs.

That’s where certified canine inspections come in. Bed bug sniffing dogs undergo rigorous scent detection training to distinguish the scent of bed bugs and their eggs. They can reliably find bed bugs with an impressive 98% accuracy rate, whereas traditional visual inspections by humans typically only have a 40–60% accuracy rate.

At MMPC, we offer residential and commercial K9 inspections on a one-time, as needed, or recurring basis. In each case, we inspect the premises thoroughly and provide documentation with evidence of bed bugs (if any are found).

Our NESDCA-certified canine teams frequently work with landlords, tenants, homeowners, property managers, businesses, retail stores, moving companies, and more. We’ve even inspected for bed bugs on trains, cruise ships, and airplanes!

Each of our certified K9 inspection teams consists of a specially-trained bed bug sniffing dog working alongside an experienced handler. The handler carefully guides the canine around each room in order to thoroughly sniff out all possible hiding spots. Whenever the canine signals an alert, the handler follows up with a visual inspection to confirm the findings.

During the process, we typically ask people and pets to leave the room in order to limit the number of distracting scents. At the end, clients receive a detailed summary of findings and appropriate recommendations for treatment (if evidence is found).

The inspection helps to determine three important things:

  1. Do you have any bed bugs?
  2. If yes, where are they hiding?
  3. What is the scope of the infestation (i.e. isolated or spread out)?

This provides valuable information about your situation and helps us come up with a comprehensive plan to deal with a potential bed bug infestation.

When to Get a K9 Inspection

  • You notice bug bites of unknown origin, occurring at night or after recent travel.
  • You notice other signs of bed bugs, such as shed skins (shell casings), fecal matter, eggs, bloodstains on sheets, or unusual musty odors.
  • You suspect bed bugs but have not found physical evidence yet.
  • You found a bed bug in your home or business and you’re concerned about a possible infestation.
  • There have been recent bed bug sightings in neighboring apartments.
  • You’re a landlord and your tenants have reported bed bugs.
  • You want to confirm that an infestation was successful treated (usually 30 days afterward).

Preparing for a K9 Inspection

To ensure an accurate inspection, cooperation from residents is very important. Prior to the inspection, residents should:

  • Avoid spraying pesticides, which can be harmful to the canine.
  • Clear the inspection area of any clutter and pull furniture away from walls.
  • Minimize odors (strong food smells, smoking materials, and cleaning agents).
  • Remove distractions by turning off fans and closing windows. If you live with pets, put away pet toys and pet food.

Our Team

MMPC’s bed bug sniffing dogs are tested and certified by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA). They undergo routine weekly training as well as yearly re-certification tests to keep their noses sharp!

Our experienced inspector conducts a comprehensive visual examination of common bed bug hiding spots, including cracks, crevices, seams, and other potential harborage areas. We look for live bed bugs and other indicators of an infestation, including shed skins (shell casings), fecal matter, and eggs.

After the inspection, clients receive a detailed summary of findings and appropriate recommendations for treatment (if evidence is found).

Sometimes people confuse other insects for bed bugs, leading to unnecessary stress. If you discover a pest in your home that you suspect might be a bed bug, send a picture or video to our Free Pest ID Center for confirmation by one of our expert entomologists.
