Termites are the most economically expensive insects in the United States and probably in the world. Termites cause more damage to homes than fire and flood combined. Their destructive force is simply incredible and they cause millions of dollars worth of damage every year. Property owners tend to forget that termites attacking homes are simply performing their natural function of breaking down wood. Termites are common in forests as recyclers of wood.

There are several species of termites in the United States. The most common ones are the Subterranean, Drywood and Formosan termites. Among these three species, the Subterranean termite is the most common and most widely distributed termite in North America particularly in the Northeast. What makes these insects so destructive is their ability to actually digest the wood fiber or cellulose. The actual digestion of wood is performed in the gut of a termite by protozoa living there. The protozoa are passed on from generation to generation by the feeding of termite fecal matter from adults to young termites.

Because of the dynamic nature of termites, there are many treatments and termiticide available for homes. However, the proper treatment and termiticide depends on the home construction and severity of the infestation. Even with the correct treatment, it is important that the proper and approved method is practiced to achieve protection. If the technician does not dig the appropriate sized trench and drill the appropriately spaced holes through the concrete, you will not get proper protection. Some companies will drill the hole greater than 12” apart to save themselves money. As a result, termite treatments are highly regulated by local and state agencies. It is imperative to find a certified pest control firm that has at least 10 years of experience and an affiliation with reputable consumer agencies such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Your treatment warranty is only as good as the company providing it. A treatment should come with a conditional 8 year Guarantee, but the warranty is worthless if the service company is no longer around.
