Watch NYC's New Bedbug Detectives, a video about bed bug detecting canines, including our own Champ. The video was originally created for Northattan.org, a news source for “Manhattan’s northern neighborhoods”. It has also appeared on PBS and in The Huffington Post.
Meet Champ. He is M&M’s fully certified bedbug detecting dog. Not to be confused with other canines in his trade, Champ stands apart for the following reasons:
- He received full certification from the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA) — Champ was just one month old when he was rescued and brought in to the Florida training center where he spent nine intensive months at work, fulfilling the requirements for his certification.
- Champ detects the scent of live bedbugs and viable eggs — Champ’s training adhered singularly to the exclusive detection of live bedbugs and viable eggs. Focusing on this guarantees to get rapidly to the root of any bedbug infestation.
- Champ’s two M&M handlers trained alongside Champ at the NESDCA — Behind every good dog is a great handler. On staff at M&M we have two fully certified members who also took time to train with Champ at the NESDCA.
- Champ’s training is routinely reinforced on a daily basis — Between two and three times a day, every single day, Champ practices the detection of live bedbugs with his handlers to keep his training and skills fresh and sharp, ready to be put to work.
- We don’t just call him ‘Champ’ for no reason — Most bedbug sniffing dogs have a 98% success rate. With skills so sharp, Champ ends up saving renters and home-owners time and money by distinguishing between rooms that are infested, requiring treatment; and those unaffected, which can be left alone.
About Bedbugs: Bedbugs are small, thin and capable of burrowing deep inside very narrow cracks. They are mainly active at night, when they will routinely travel a 20-foot radius back and forth from their hiding places, just to take a blood meal. Bedbugs are very adaptable: they move quickly and can pass through much smaller openings or cracks than most people would normally expect. For this reason inspecting for bedbugs is extremely difficult, even for experienced inspectors.
About Reactive Services: In order to eliminate the problem in the quickest and most effective way possible, let Champ inspect your property to determine which areas and rooms are infested. This will assist your pest control specialist by eliminating the guess work and ensuring that he/she is treating the exact locations of the infestations, which helps to reduce the need for additional treatments.
If you have already had your premises treated by a pest control specialist, let us inspect the property to assure you that the problem has been eliminated. Time is of the essence in elimination. The sooner bedbugs are identified, the sooner your pest control specialist can be brought back in to stop the reproduction cycle, and the sooner you can get back to your normal life.
About Proactive Services: We are happy to customize an inspection schedule for your property, whether on a one time, as needed, or a recurring basis. Demanding that properties be certified as bedbug free is becoming increasingly common for prospective renters and home-owners everywhere. We will proactively inspect your property and provide you with documentation that will announce that you have made every effort possible to ensure your property is of the highest standards, and is entirely free of bedbugs.
